AI in Science at UPJŠ: US Expert to Lead Workshops and Lectures

In October 2026, the Center for Interdisciplinary Biosciences at TIP UPJŠ will welcome Dr Richard Luke Daniels from The College of Idaho, USA. An expert in biological sciences, research ethics and biosafety, Dr Daniels will complete a two-week academic visit at our university. The visit will take place within the prestigious Fulbright Specialist Program and with the support of the APBC project. The project is funded by the European Union under NextGenerationEU through the Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Slovak Republic.

The visit will focus on the responsible and practical use of generative artificial intelligence in scientific research, university education and academic publishing. The programme will include hands-on workshops and public lectures. It is intended for Master’s students, doctoral students, researchers and academic staff. The aim is to demonstrate how AI tools can be used effectively and transparently without compromising critical thinking, academic integrity or responsible authorship.

Workshop and lecture topics:

Literature search: Strategies for formulating prompts for AI tools and critically evaluating scientific literature.
Scientific writing and ethics: Approaches to revising scientific texts, requirements of scientific journals and preservation of the author’s own writing style.
Project design: Using AI to develop experimental protocols, prepare project proposals and create statistical models.
Academic integrity: Risks associated with inappropriate AI use and compliance with ethical principles.

The programme will include interactive workshops tailored to different groups of students and researchers, as well as public lectures on the opportunities, risks and limitations of using AI in the biological sciences.
