From University Research to Practical Solutions: TIP-UPJŠ Develops Collaboration with Bioinova
The Technology and Innovation Park at UPJŠ (TIP-UPJŠ) bridges scientific research with the needs of industry. The collaboration with Bioinova, a.s., serves as an example of how knowledge from the academic sphere can contribute to the development of innovative solutions with potential applications in both medicine and animal production.
The scientific partnership between the Technology and Innovation Park of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (TIP-UPJŠ) and Bioinova, a.s., has reached another significant milestone. Following the signing of a contract for commissioned research focused on chitinases, Peter Bauer from Bioinova, a.s., visited the Center for Interdisciplinary Biosciences (CIB) at TIP-UPJŠ to gain a firsthand look at the project's progress, the experimental procedures employed, and the initial research findings.
During his visit, Peter Bauer was welcomed by the Director of TIP-UPJŠ, RNDr. Andrej Miroššay, PhD., the Head of CIB TIP-UPJŠ, Prof. RNDr. Erik Sedlak, DrSc.; and research scientists RNDr. Michal Nemergut, PhD., and Mgr. Mária Tomková, PhD. The visit included a tour of the laboratories, an overview of the research infrastructure, and a technical discussion regarding the experiments conducted and the results achieved. Direct Contact Between Scientists and Industrial Practice
One of the most significant aspects of the meeting was the discussion regarding preliminary experiments and initial project results. Direct interaction between the research commissioner and the experts conducting the work facilitates a better understanding of the data obtained, allows for the clarification of experimental procedures, and enables collaborative discussion on the future direction of the research.
Such meetings constitute a vital component of the collaboration between universities and the business sector. They allow for the ongoing evaluation of results, the alignment of research activities with the partner's needs, and the more effective application of expert resources toward addressing specific technological and practical challenges.
Chitinases with Potential for Medicine and Animal Production
A research project focused on chitinases holds broad potential for application. Its significance lies in the exploration of new ways to utilize biological knowledge—both in human medicine and in the sectors of fish farming, poultry production, and livestock farming.
A particularly important area involves seeking solutions that could, in the future, contribute to a more responsible use of antibiotics in animal production. Achieving this goal requires systematic research, rigorous experimental validation, and close cooperation between scientific institutions and their industry partners.
It is precisely this integration of the research team’s expertise with the specific needs of the company Bioinova, a. s., that creates the opportunity to progressively validate potential applications for the knowledge gained. TIP-UPJŠ as a Partner for Innovation
Collaboration with industrial partners is a key part of the mission of the Technology and Innovation Park at UPJŠ (TIP-UPJŠ). The university’s facilities offer specialized expertise, research capacity, and methodological knowledge that can help address specific challenges arising from industry practice.
Contract research emphasizes not only scientific quality but also efficient planning, adherence to agreed-upon deadlines, and ongoing communication with the partner. In-person meetings help build trust and allow both parties to gain a better understanding of the various stages of the research process.
The visit by Peter Bauer underscored the importance of open professional dialogue and the direct connection between academic research and the needs of the industry. For TIP-UPJŠ, the collaboration with Bioinova, a. s., represents an opportunity to further advance research activities and demonstrates that university teams are capable of addressing specific requirements originating from the business sector.
The Technology and Innovation Park at UPJŠ thanks Peter Bauer for his visit, and extends its gratitude to colleagues from the Centre for Interdisciplinary Biosciences for their professional work and cooperation on the project.
